چکیده

Prior numerical modelling studies show that atmospheric dispersion is sensitive to surface heterogeneities, but past studies do not consider the impact of a realistic distribution of surface heterogeneities on mesoscale atmospheric dispersion. While these focussed on dispersion in the convective boundary layer, the present work also considers dispersion in the nocturnal boundary layer and above. Using a Lagrangian particle dispersion model (LPDM) coupled to the Eulerian Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS), the impact of topographic, vegetation, and soil moisture heterogeneities on daytime and nighttime atmospheric dispersion is examined. In addition, the sensitivity to the use of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived spatial distributions of vegetation characteristics on atmospheric dispersion is also studied. The impact of vegetation and terrain heterogeneities on atmospheric dispersion is strongly modulated by soil moisture, with the nature of dispersion switching from non-Gaussian to nearGaussian behaviour for wetter soils (fraction of saturation soil moisture content exceeding 40%). For drier soil moisture conditions, vegetation heterogeneity produces differential heating and the formation of mesoscale circulation patterns that are primarily responsible for non-Gaussian dispersion patterns. Nighttime dispersion is very sensitive to topographic, vegetation, soil moisture, and soil type heterogeneity and is distinctly non-Gaussian for heterogeneous land-surface conditions. Sensitivity studies show that soil type and vegetation Y. Wu · U. S. Sensitivity of atmospheric dispersion simulations by HYSPLIT to the meteorological predictions from a meso-scale model

Mesoscale transport and dispersion of air pollutants from a few major point sources in the Mississippi Gulf coastal region is calculated using a coupled modeling system consisting of the atmospheric dynamical model WRF and the lagrangian particle model HYSPLIT. The sensitivity of the dispersion model results to the meteorological fields is studied by conducting an ensemble of simulations using ...

High Resolution Mesoscale Atmospheric Model Prediction and Validation

The long-term goal of this project is to improve the high-resolution model forecasts by developing a real-time globally re-locatable capability to initialize/assimilate the Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) land-surface model soil parameters. The partition of the model surface sensible and latent heat fluxes in the land-surface parameterization is sensitive to the in...

Effects of Soil Moisture Heterogeneity on Boundary Layer Flow with Coupled Groundwater, Land-surface, and Mesoscale Atmospheric Modeling

Mesoscale atmospheric models currently rely on an integrated land-surface model to provide fluxes of heat, momentum, and moisture from the land surface to the atmosphere. While improvements have been made by tuning land-surface models for a variety of test cases, current models are limited to vertical transport in a shallow soil column. They are thus unable to capture lateral transport of soil ...

A Study of Mesoscale Atmospheric Circulations Induced by Land Surface Heterogeneity

Mesoscale circulations induced by complex land surface have been investigated using linear stochastic models and a nonlinear numerical model. Random distributions of differential surface heating and variable topography are described in terms of homogeneous random fields. Analytical solutions for the linear atmospheric systems under these random surface forcings have been obtained. The stochasti...
